Text Based Literacy Overview Years 1 to 6
The topics covered by each class are listed in the tables below. Each topic is linked to a related text or texts covering the main text types as set out by shakespeareandmore.com for Key Stage 2. Writing opportunities are suggested with reference to Michael Tidd’s Four Purposes for Writing and reference should be made to this document when planning and delivering Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling to ensure complete coverage.
The teaching of Grammar and Punctuation should be integrated within the whole topic teaching and should complement the text and genre being addressed. Spelling should be taught in a separate lesson but, where possible, can be linked to the text and genre – e.g. covering word origins or ‘sc’ words whilst teaching Ancient Greece in Year 5 and 6.
Additional resources such as Literacy Shed, poetry and non-fiction texts should be used to complement the teaching framework set out here.
In addition to the texts listed here, class teachers should read aloud an age appropriate novel for pleasure. This novel may be linked to the topic but this is not a requirement.
