This week with autumn officially starting on Sunday was all about looking for and collecting evidence of the autumn season getting underway Firstly however, we noticed all the feathers from a pigeon that had been eaten by a sparrowhawk and talked about that. There were loads of seedheads on the ground as well as red and brown autumn leaves. We found seeds that were protected in cases,: Honesty and Conkers; seeds that flew like darts: echinops and seeds that get stuck to animals and carried along. Interestingly, echinops is the Greek word for hedgehog because of the spikes. Lots of seeds got planted and watered and I think quite a few probably got blown by the wind. Some such as the Yellow Flag Iris in the photo are still ripening inside.
