After the unseasonably warm weather we have enjoyed over the past few days, it felt decidedly autumnal this afternoon. As it had rained, it seemed a good time to dig over the outside bed where the blackcurrants grow.  It had definitely benefited from the mustard seed we dug in last year, as we spotted quite a few worms. We also unearthed a ladybird looking for somewhere to overwinter ( we put it back) and a dying wasp. Some insects don't last the winter I am afraid, unless it is the queen. We also added to our composts, gave them a stir and noticed other detritivores such as fruit flies, centipedes and woodlice. We also picked up conkers with a view to watching them sprout into a horse chestnut sapling which Lucas was desperate to plant in the nature area!
